The "Dreadful" Project

Hey all! Recently, I signed up for the Art House Co-op's The "Dreadful"Project. They asked for participants to "illustrate a monster, create an eerie scene, share your greatest fear, or whatever lurks within us all."

With a just BIC pen in hand, I tried to create something truly dreadful.

Halloween Art Show.

Back in October, the lovely people at Golden Spiral Studios asked me to contribute to their Halloween Art Show.  I created two block prints around a undead theme.  The first is as if you are seeing three zombie characters crawl out of the darkness into the dim light.  The second is a zombie version of Spider-man.  It was so awesome to be a part of such a brilliant and eclectic body of show.  These pieces are still for sale, so if you are interested feel free to contact me.

A Hootenanny.

Over the holiday season, I decided that I was going to make some handmade postcards for my friends and family.  For the past 30 something years, my father has been known to write and illustrate his own Christmas cards.  I felt like this year I would put my own spin on his tradition.  Being a print maker, I carved a stamp into this Christmas-spirited owl you see below.  The owl is named 'Jo-Jo the Judgement Owl' and is a running joke among my friends and family.  He actually has his own Facebook fan page (http://on.fb.me/SmzKPV).  With different colors of card stock and ink on my side, I was able to make a few different versions of my feathered friend.  Everything ended up very successful and ended up sending out 40 Christmas postcards!

WHY WE DRAW.

Ever wonder why we draw?  The Gatewood Gallery is taking on this question with a new exhibition.  This open call for work is entitled "Why We Draw: An Exploration of Drawing", and will run from October 29th to November 7th.  Of course, you can be sure to see my submission there!

Why I drew:

My piece is entitled "The State of Tate".  This is a visual representation of the movement and signage on Tate Street in Greensboro, NC.  The darker and thicker lines demonstrate the busier areas whether that be from bicycle, car, or foot traffic.  There are some remnants of signage, but most are nonrepresentational as you would only see them in passing.  These would be fragmented without intentional focus.

Grand Canyon Sketchbook Pg. 1

Hey all! I've been so busy with One Day Apparel stuff that I haven't had time to do some scanning.   So, I decided that it would be great to share some drawings from my backpacking trip through the Grand Canyon this summer.  I dedicated a whole sketchbook to help capture moments from this once in a lifetime opportunity.  I hope you enjoy the first batch of scribblings!

Zine and Heard.

Ah yes, The Coraddi! UNC-Greensboro's student-run magazine filled with both art and lit gems alike.  Although it is normally a Fall/Spring installation, they are accepting submissions for a summer zine.  The theme is 'Sketchbook/Journal' with 2 grayscale scans per person.  I was so excited to get involved because I am really big into sketchbooking and I always have one on me.  So, I went through my pile of on-going sketchbooks and submitted these puppies! The first is from my little Grand Canyon sketchbook and the second from my beloved moleskin. Hope you enjoy!

Aye Eye Captain!

Here are some of my fiddlings from Color Theory class today. I really enjoy combining gouache, pen, and marker to try out some different color relationships. These little experiments may be used as college materials for my final piece or who knows, maybe just fun for now.

MADBALLS

Does anyone remember Madballs? They were these balls that came out in the late 80s/early 90s, and they totally embodied the gross out/slime kid factor of the time. So of course I had one. These found their way back into my mind when I found Madballs stickers at the dollar store. One of the stickers was this toothy, oozing robot creature, and, in needing a break from assigned art projects, I decided to draw it and throw some gouache on top.
With names like, Slobulus, Repvile, and Swine Sucker, how could you not want one? They even managed to make an animated series out of them. I suppose its freaky fun for everyone.

I'm finally got a hold of one of the scanners at school so here are some sketchbook images. It seems like I've been pouring all free moments into my sketchbook studies, but hopefully I can upload some pictures of my current paintings soon. My color theory class has opened me up to gouache, and I've been having a lot of fun incorporating it with ink drawings. So here they are!
